Since 2014, Hector Rail has collaborated with Stockholm Exergi to ensure reliable transport of biofuel to their facility in Värtan, where it is converted into district heating that plays a vital role in supplying large parts of the Stockholm region.
Stockholm Exergi's operations are critical to society, placing high demands on transport reliability regardless of external conditions. Demand varies depending on weather and temperature: colder periods require rapid increases in volume, while milder winters result in shorter fuel seasons. This creates a need for both flexibility and a high level of delivery reliability.
Stockholm Exergi's operations are critical to society, placing high demands on transport reliability regardless of external conditions. At the same time, demand varies depending on weather and temperature: colder periods require rapid increases in volume, while milder winters result in shorter fuel seasons. This creates a need for both flexibility and a high level of delivery reliability.
To meet these demands, Hector Rail and Stockholm Exergi have together developed an efficient and unique logistics chain. The collaboration has included building up the infrastructure in Värtan, where an automated unloading facility with robotic handling enables fast and smooth operations. The fuel is transferred directly from the trains into an underground storage facility, creating an efficient flow at a site located in the heart of Stockholm.
Hector Rail is responsible for both train operations and shunting at the facility. To meet the customer's requirements for minimizing environmental impact, locomotives powered by the renewable fuel HVO100 are used instead of diesel, and an electric shunting locomotive is also part of the solution. Through a long-term partnership and a flexible approach, we contribute to a secure and sustainable energy supply for Stockholm.
